Mankind has been working with
glass for nearly 5000 years...shaping and molding it, blowing it,
coloring and etching it... from the beginning we have all been
delighted with its clearness, depth of color, it's willingness to
changed or manipulated. These unique characteristics have allowed
glass to be the chosen material of so many artists over the ages.
It is
amazing how we can so seemingly control this material to do
virtually anything we as artists desire...but it can be
surprisingly capricious when we try to dominate it...it can be
fragile, shattering at the most delicate touch, sometimes it can be
too hard, or too soft. Glass can stop the assault of a golf ball
sticking it mid-flight, then crumble when gently set on its an edge.
It is these contradictions that I find glass so intriguing to work
with. I have learned that etching and carving glass requires a
unique partnership between the artist and this wonderful material
...glass has a mind of its own, it won't be dominated ...it demands
that the artist understand and respect it... when he does, the glass
is transformed into an object of beauty.
